Revenue Reset #1: What Is Revenue Management and Why Should You Care?
When you run a hotel, stability can feel like success. Rooms filled. Staff in place. Rates set. But sometimes what feels like stability is actually stagnation.
That’s where Raj was. Comfortable, familiar, and holding tight to flat pricing because “it has always worked.” But the truth is, in 2025, it doesn’t work anymore.
Not when travelers check multiple platforms.
Not when guest behavior changes by the hour.
Not when expectations evolve faster than most hotel pricing strategies do.
In the first part of my Revenue Reset series, I’m breaking down what revenue management really is and why independent hotels should care.
Revenue management isn’t a tool. It’s not a dashboard, or a tech upgrade.
It’s a mindset.
It’s about seeing your rooms not just as spaces to fill, but as opportunities to grow revenue every single day, based on what the market is doing and what your guests are willing to pay.
Flat pricing in today’s market? It’s like using a flip phone in a smartphone world. You can still make calls but you’re missing everything else.
Start small. One high demand date. One low demand date.
Use Excel if that’s what you have. The point isn’t perfection, it’s progress. You’ll be surprised how much clarity shows up when you start looking at your numbers through the right lens.
Even guests understand it. They know Uber costs more when it rains. They know flights are pricier on Fridays. What they want is value. What they want is a reason to book with you.
Raj started off skeptical. Forced to change, unsure if it was worth it. But once he saw the patterns, understood the levers, and noticed the shift in his numbers, he didn’t look back.
You don’t need a tool to start revenue management. You need curiosity. And a commitment to grow.
This is just the beginning. Start practicing revenue management today. And keep following along as there’s more to come.
If this topic made you curious or left you with questions, I’ve created a short explainer video that breaks it down in a simple, real-world way.
You can watch it here: What is Revenue Management and Why should you care?
It’s just a few minutes long and will help you understand the concept better, especially if you're new to revenue management.
There’s also a free downloadable Revenue Starter Kit linked in the video description. Use it to start building your revenue strategy in a practical way.
Once you’ve seen the video and tried the kit, write back or leave a comment. Tell me what made sense and what you'd like to learn next.
